James Michael Howard, a native of Florida, launched his own interiors firm in 1988, after 12 years of working with various design firms. Jim’s meticulous attention to architectural detailing and his lavish application of color, texture, and pattern are hallmarks of his style.

Schooled in design at Parsons in New York, Jim developed a passion for both classical and modern elements of design and decoration early in his career. His architectural detailing, coupled with his understanding of furniture style and function enables him to effortlessly create extraordinary and timeless residence for his clients. Jim is able to translate the hopes and dreams of his clients and customize his designs to exceed all expectations. He seamlessly blends traditional styles with modern sensibilities to achieve a relaxed, comfortable elegance. Jim proves that the classical vocabulary continues to be fresh, clever, and pertinent to contemporary life.
In addition to Jim’s thriving interiors business, he also owns and operates the successful retail interiors stores—Mrs. Howard and Max and Company along with his wife Phoebe Howard. Each has multiple locations throughout the South. They also have a furniture collection Mr. and Mrs. Howard for Sherrill Furniture, which is available in their retail stores as well as retailers nationwide.
His projects, which include Florida beach houses, Montana retreats, and Virginia country houses, always manage to blend his creative aesthetic to complement the needs and tastes of his clients. Jim’s work has been featured in Decor, Coastal Living, House Beautiful, Southern Accents, and Veranda among others.
